Instinct is awesome! My dog Finn is reactive and territorial; he had some prior training (mostly for leash walking) but was still fearful and anxious around people indoors. He stayed 2 weeks at Instinct for Camp+Coaching, where his trainer Rebecca helped him learn coping skills. Rebecca gained Finn’s trust so quickly! She was very patient with him and I could tell from the daily photos and videos she sent that he was having a good time and learning a lot. We’ve had some post-camp in-home training sessions as well, to reinforce and extend what he learned. While Finn will always be anxious, he is much less reactive now, and with the home visits I’m gaining skills to help him manage his big feelings. His progress is clear: he can sit quietly in the elevator, and will choose to hang out in his crate when there are people around. Rebecca is a terrific trainer, thoughtful, professional, and truly invested in my dog’s growth. I recommend Instinct (and Rebecca!) so highly, especially for pups who need gentle, non-aversive training methods. We will keep working with Instinct — I just booked another Camp stay for Finn!

We were so impressed with Instinct training and are so thrilled that we used them to help with training for our dog Yogi. We were particularly impressed and thrilled with our experiences with trainer: Samantha Bell-Brown. She was extremely professional - always on time and ready to work with Yogi, always prepared with additional snacks, and constantly checking in in-between sessions to ensure good continuity. She taught us so much about dog training with endless practical tips that worked extremely well. Yogi absolutely adored Sam and misses her so much now that our sessions are over. Sam ensured all sessions were centered around what we and Yogi needed - adapting her tips and sessions to whatever was most important at that time. She helped us with potty training, impulse control, walking with good manners, dropping objects she picked up, relaxing when we are trying to get work done - truly everything. Yogi is the absolute BEST - we have Sam to thank for a lot of that and for helping us become lifelong trainers ourselves! Should we get another puppy or if Yogi needs additional training - we would absolutely use Instinct again and recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful training experience!

We loved our experience with at-home dog training with Greta! She cared so much about us, our new puppy and his well-being. She took our worries about his behavior seriously and provided us with actionable steps to move forward. Greta is a wealth of knowledge and wed definitely recommend her services, as well as Instinct, to anyone!

I am always thrilled to board my dog here whenever I go on vacation. I have complete peace of mind knowing she’ll be treated like family, and she’s always excited to return. The staff here is fantastic, treating both you and your pet with genuine care. It’s such a relief not having to worry about how she’s being looked after or whether she’s eating well. Instinct keeps you updated on your dog’s well-being, and my dog always arrives happy and leaves just as happy. 🩷With love Big Bella and Mom

Casey K and all the staff at Instinct are so professional, knowledgeable, and treated my puppy as if she was a part of their family! I left my puppy Bean with Casey for two weeks as a part of their puppy raising program, and I recommend it so highly to anyone looking to get their puppy on the right start. I would have been lost without their training and expertise honestly! We will definitely be back to board and train again for our little girl!

I initially expressed disappointment with the training at Instinct Dog Behavior & Training due to a lack of noticeable changes in my dogs behavior. However, I want to take a moment to highlight the positive follow-up I received from the team. They reached out to me to address my concerns and worked diligently to tailor a training program specific to my dogs needs. I truly appreciate their professionalism and commitment to meeting my expectations. It’s clear that they genuinely care about their clients and their pets.Thank you, Instinct Dog Behavior & Training, for your dedication to improving my experience!

I have had two dogs trained at Instinct. To say the trainers and caretakers are passionate about their work with dogs, would be an understatement. These folks go out of their way to make sure the dogs and families they’re working with are set up for success. Oyuki has been our most recent trainer with our 160lbs, protective mastiff mix. She has given us the tools to prevent leash aggression which has been our biggest issue to date and as you can imagine, quite the challenge when walking a giant breed. Jupiter is much calmer thanks to the tools we were given at Instinct and when he’s boarded there, we know he’s well taken care of and stimulated. We’re so grateful for everyone at Instinct for showing love and patience to our big guy.

Jessica changed our lives! We came to instinct because of Winnie’s major fear reactivity and overall anxiety about the world. When we started we could barely go outside without Winnie reacting to something and it being really stressful for both of us. Jessica gave us both tools and confidence to move through the world together. 2 years later and Winnie is doing things I never thought imaginable for her. Going on hikes, taking vacations, running on the beach, happily meeting new people and dogs! Of course it’s still something we work hard for everyday, but we do it with confidence! We will always be grateful to Jessica and instinct! And highly recommend anyone to use them no matter the circumstances you and your dogs are facing, they will help you with kindness and compassion ❤️

Instinct Dog Behavior and Training provided an exceptional experience for both my dog Ginger and me. Facing Gingers separation anxiety last summer after moving to a new apartment was distressing. She couldnt stand being by herself, was panicking, had anxiety attacks. Jessicas help at Instinct and personalized approach made all the difference. Her compassionate guidance helped us manage Gingers anxiety and strengthened our bond. I didnt think that in just 6 months things would be better but in just this amount of time, with weekly meetings, and daily training, Ginger was better! Now we are training in person for reactivity and scent work. My experience at Instinct changed my confidence and trust in the communication between my dog and I. From the warm welcome to the ongoing support, Jessicas dedication to our success is evident at every step. I highly recommend Instinct Dog Behavior and Training to anyone facing similar challenges with their furry companions.

My dog went to instinct for puppy training for two weeks and couldn’t recommend enough! We had Casey and absolutely loved her. She provided us daily updates, photos, and videos and after the two weeks my puppy’s anxiety had very much improved, gotten used to city sounds, and knew basic obedience skills such as sit, down, and touch.

  • Review 11 (2024-02-02 - Rating: 5)

Instinct has been truly amazing for my pup Hendricks and me!For background, Hendricks is a 1 year old rescue. When I first adopted him in August 2023, he was high energy, very reactive towards other dogs, sensitive to loud noises and would react with very loud barks, and just in general had a hard time settling down. I researched a lot online and started training him on my own, but decided it would be beneficial to seek professional help, specifically from those that used positive training and would train him in NYC.I started with 3 at-home classes with Mari, who really helped teach me the basics and prioritize what to work on with Hendricks. Then, I signed him up for two camps that coincided with my travel plans over Thanksgiving and Christmas. He stayed at the East Harlem facility for 2 weeks in November, then was back with me for a couple weeks, then back at Instinct for 3 weeks across Dec-Jan. There, he worked directly with Oyuki to help learn settling skills, loose leash walking, navigating around other dogs and dealing with his reactivity, and more (Recall, Drop, etc.)While he was at camp, Oyuki and the canine care team all sent frequent updates, along with pictures and videos to show me how he was doing and what he was learning. He clearly had a blast there and loved playing in the big backyard and running around with other pups who were specifically selected to match with his needs. From a training perspective, Oyuki was very responsive to my many questions and very helpfully showed and taught me what I would need to do. The videos were also especially helpful for me to see how to continue to train Hendricks, once he transitioned back home to my care. The camp also came with a mid-camp in-facility lesson, as well as ones at the end when I came to take Hendricks home, and it was great to be able to talk with Oyuki and see in person how she handled certain situations with Hendricks. It was also so sweet to see the bond that they built up with each other!Hendricks absolutely fell in love with Oyuki, and he’s learned so much from her! He’s calmed down significantly and can now settle on his own comfortably without me having to guide him. His reactivity has also improved tremendously, and he can now mostly walk neutrally by other dogs. Of course, he’ll always stay a reactive dog, but he’s learning to deal with it, and I have much better control over it as well. He’s better with impulse control, and can take time to think and listen before he acts. His basic cues are also much improved and more consistent. And personally for me, I feel like a better, smarter dog owner and much more confident in my own ability to train him too.All in all, I cannot recommend Instinct enough. From the start with in-home lessons to his camps to all the follow-up afterwards, it’s so clear that each and every one of Instinct’s team members care so much for Hendricks and also do their best to help me learn as much as I can. Thank you so much to everyone at Instinct for all that you do - Hendricks and I are forever grateful!!!

  • Review 12 (2022-05-03 - Rating: 5)

We are so glad we called Instinct! We had a bad experience with a previous trainer, but the second Ayelet got on the phone with us we knew we were in good hands. We were even sent an hour long questionnaire about our dogs history/health/behavior/etc. prior to training. Yall...they care so much!We have a 1 year old rescue pup whos dog reactive, and weve been pretty much unable to take him on walks or near other dogs at all. Jenna helped us overcome all of this and we could not be more grateful. She coached us on how to slowly warm him up to lots of different scenarios- we even had a playdate with another dog today with no issues! His reactivity will be something well continue to work on for months, but I cant tell you how relieved we are to have gained some confidence with it. Jenna really helped put things into perspective and helped us understand how to read our dog and take things at his pace. You really cant rush progress like this, and I love that Instinct doesnt promise quick, fast, easy results because those are not effective or even possible. We would absolutely do this again if given the chance, booking with Instinct was a game changer.

Instinct was our last hope when it came to training Winston. He has severe anxiety and really had a hard time with going outside and being around new people. He was in the board and train program for two weeks, and the work that Oyuki and Kelly did with him has completely surpassed our expectations. The fact that Winston is excited to see them even after a few months of being back home says so much. We still have work to do with our little anxious boy, but its easier to go on walks with him and we were even able to sit down for a bit at the park. We also have the proper tools and guidance to continue his training and Oyuki has been nothing but supportive whenever any questions come up. If youre considering boarding and/or training with Instinct, go for it. Beyond the training and their top tier expertise, the care and love theyve shown Winston is the most valuable to us. We now feel comfortable that he has a second home if we ever need to board him while weve traveling.

  • Review 14 (2018-02-27 - Rating: 5)

Instinct is an amazing facility. My dog, Archer, wasnt a crazy, misbehaving dog by any means, but he definitely couldve had some improvements. When we went on walks, he got very leash aggressive and barked and lunged towards several dogs. It made walking very frustrating. After a great evaluation, I was proposed with a 2 week camp, which I happily accepted. Sarah Dixon, his trainer, is a dream to work with. She asked questions to understand Archer fully. She sent update emails and videos to show his progress. When I picked Archer up, we had our 1 hour lesson, but it was really cold and rainy, so Sarah was kind enough to move it to a different time. After following the steps that Sarah provided, Archer and I can go on walks happily. The methods that she taught were not negative reinforcement at all. Id also like to point out that Sarah will reach out periodically even after she has completed her sessions with me. Its very clear, both in her actions and Archers reaction when seeing her, that she cares about the outcome of your dog. Everyone I interacted with was professional, happy, and helpful. If you do choose Instinct, I highly recommend Sarah Dixon, and Archer does too.

Instinct is the only place I trust with my dogs care. My dog has an anxious disposition and they know how to calm his and my nerves :) I love my dog like a child, and am very selective about where I leave him when I have to travel. Instinct is the only place I use for my dog Antonio. The staff is great! Dayvonne always alleviates all my worries and truly loves the dogs that are in Instincts care. I highly recommend for boarding and training!

We had an amazing experience here with Instinct. We opted to go with a 5 week at home puppy training with Mari, and it was perfect. Mari is kind, caring, patient and extremely knowledgeable, and has not only helped our new puppy acclimate to NYC, but also taught my girlfriend and I so much about our puppy and dog training/behavior as well. We are especially grateful as we found out after purchasing our puppy that he was from a puppy mill, and we were so nervous about what his experience would be like, and Mari and the folks at instinct helped us every step of the way and I would not change a single thing about my puppy or decision because of it.We also attended the free puppy classes on Sundays with Rebecca, and she is awesome as well. From my first phone conversation with Jessica, to the free in person visit to meet my puppy, to the home training and boarding, everything we have done with instinct has been phenomenal. These folks really love dogs, and I highly recommend them!

This is a great place for behavior modification or just basic manners. My friend sent her puppy here to keep it from chewing her out of house and home. We sent our rescue pocket pit here...she had significant and concerning issues that we were just not able to handle on our own. We had a lot of dog experience already because we already had a large dog in the home but these were just beyond us as they were defensive and fear based. We sent our pit to a 2 week camp, in hopes that we could keep her. At the time she was very reactive, unresponsive to normal leash training, squirrels caused epic melt downs...it was basically like having a small blender at the end of the leash. The dog had a fantastic time! She was super happy there, and she learned LOADS. If we had known we would have sent her for 3...but I get that its super hard know if your doing the right thing. She now has very good leash manners, responds well to commands, and if she does get upset about a squirrel or another dog....she listens. She may let you know what she wants, but in the end she differs to us. We are SUPER pleased with the results. I know its expensive...but it was 2 weeks for a lifetime with this particular dog, and we are thrilled it all worked out. (The spotted one is the pocket pit:)

This is a review for Instincts Board and Camp program in Harlem, NY. I sent my dog Dash to camp for 2 weeks to work on leash training skills and reinforce some commands for better behavior. I worked very closely with Rebecca who was super thorough in her communication and follow-ups. After camp, Rebecca visited us at home twice to help me implement the things both Dash and I learned in our regular environment. This was critical for both of us. Dash absolutely loved her and all of the trainers he interacted with at Instinct. We both gained a lot of confidence for our walks together and I went from being pulled down the street to walking with him beside me on a slack leash - pretty amazing. Cant say enough good things about how organized and helpful the staff at Instinct have been. Highly recommend.

Instinct has been a life changer for my dog and me.We have a senior dog (14 y/o) who has always been active towards other dogs, and at this stage, we figured it was too late to even try, and figured walking would continue to be a chore. We moved into Manhattan, and decided to give some sort of training a try.We met with Jessica and purchased 6 hours of training. Our dog picked up on the strategies and skills much quicker than we thought, and just continued to grow each time we went. Jessica and Instinct have changed the rest of our time with our dog for the better, and it is so important to know that older dogs can still learn new things!

My hysterically reactive, ever-pulling rescue dog is now one of the better-behaved dogs wherever we go. He is still afraid of other pups, but I can always distract him with a treat, and he doesnt pull at the leash excessively anymore. After one week at camp, plus several at-home lessons with Kelley, my life -- and 100x over, my dogs life -- is greatly improved. THANK YOU Instinct, Jessica, and Kelley!! This place isnt cheap, but I tried working with multiple trainers before them -- believe me, its worth paying the first time.

Our pup Rudy needed some serious help. We moved to NYC from SF and he was not adjusting to his new life in the big city. Rudy was scared of all the kids, trash bags, people, scooters, delivery men, other dogs, you name it. Rudy would have melt downs on the street, jumping, biting us. It was scary. From a young age, we couldnt take Rudy many places due to these melt downs. Rudy was very frustrated and scaring us more and more every day. We thought wed have to return him to sender because he was making our lives miserable. Instinct was our last resort. We signed Rudy up for a 4 week camp. We paid boat loads of money. We left him in their hands. Trusting their word that he should be 80% improved. We were very skeptical. We visited every week. We got the updates from our trainer, Kate. On week 2, Rudy was already different. A happy camper!! Playing with other dogs. Walking on a leash, passing a kid on a scooter, not really a care in the world. We saw an immediate improvement. Kate was real with us. Rudy needed a lot of help. What this place does is work miracles. Kate is a dog whisper. Rudy LOVES her and so do we. Instinct changed Rudys life.We picked Rudy up from camp in August 2018. I waited until November to write this review because Ive been so scared Rudy would just go back to the way he was and we would have wasted all this money.Rudy is a changed pup! We can take him anywhere without fear hell freak out or bite us. Rudy is happy. He can confidently cruise the streets, say hi to other dogs, go shopping together, you name it. Rudy even comes to work with me some days, hes that well behaved. We learned skills to help us work with Rudy and better understand him. Instinct saved us the heart ache of returning Rudy.Weve also boarded Rudy there a few times as well. He seriously loves that place. I cant say enough good things about the trainers at Instinct.TLDR: Highly recommend Instinct. They are true professionals that care deeply about your dogs wellbeing and behavior improvement. They are highly capable and excellent at training dogs.

Instinct Dog Behavior & Training is great! Our trainer did a great job guiding me and my dog. He was very patient and kind. When he was a puppy their puppy play groups were great! It was NOT a noisy free for all but is was a calm organized experience where both my puppy and I felt happy and comfortable. During boarding everyone is so loving with my dog. They provide a structure for my dog so that he knows what to expect which he finds very comforting. He is a very happy camper during boarding and they give me great camper updates which my whole family loves looking at together when we are out of town.

Instinct East Harlem is the absolute best place to train and board your dog. Team members are complete professionals, highly skilled, and so sweet. My dog loves taking classes at Instinct. Training a dog is not easy, but with expert and caring Instinct instructors, and with hard work and practice, you and your dog can accomplish a lot. My dog has learned a lot from the instructors at Instinct. My dog also has a blast at boarding camp. I am always sad when I have to leave NYC and board my dog, but I cant imagine a better facility or better people to take care of my girl. I highly recommend Instinct for training and boarding.

The team at Instinct has been the absolute best! We’ve boarded our little dachshund multiple time (3 days and 5 days at a time) and have been doing in person + virtual training with them as well. We’ve been seeing really positive results. They also have worked with us and a vet behaviorist to ensure we establish a great baseline for training. They’re extremely knowledgeable, responsive to requests, and are really helpful to establish masterful routines to work with and from. A+++ totally recommended if you’re having any type of behavioral puppy issues.

Instinct has been great to work with and meet our individual needs! We adopted Waffles at 9 months old after he was re-homed twice before for behavior issues and when we got him had no leash manners and was scared of all the city stimuli. Oyuki took the time to get to know waffles and us and has transformed our pup into a the really good boy he has always been under all his fear. Now he walks so well on leash and is so much better with his manners! Oh and waffles is in LOVE with Oyuki! We are too for all the great help she has given to waffles and us.

Instinct has amazing, caring staff. I have nothing but praise for the work they do with dogs. My pup came to NYC from LA where she lived in a quiet neighborhood. In NYC going for walks was painful, shed freeze and shake because there was just too much going on. After a 3-4 week program with Instinct in east Harlem, she was a different pup. She was ready to take on the streets with a strut. My pup is a nervous wreck however, so even with the amazing work the team did, there was still work to be done. I was offered tools and resources which helped me continue with my pups training. Today, my pup could careless about the noise or the lights. People will always be scary but she looks to be to make sure all is well. And the best part of all, she is now comfortable meeting other dogs without freaking out. Instinct helped my pup shake a lot of her fear and they helped me better understand her so that I could best help her heal.

I have a very shy dog who gets overwhelmed easily isn’t successful in a traditional doggy daycare setting for boarding. I used Instinct Training for training (loved my trainer there) and was so happy to find out they also do boarding. They provide the dogs individual or small group play time depending on temperament. They even have a small yard for the dogs to relax in (a rarity for Manhattan). During down time, they give the dogs brain puzzles with treats. Caiden is so well cared for there, and my scared boy even bonded with the staff. I highly recommend Instinct for boarding and training.

We had a great experience with Instinct. Our rescue dog had severe separation anxiety, crying and howling the moment we left the apartment. After three training sessions with Sarah, the improvement is remarkable, with our dog now able to calmly lay in the living room while were out.Throughout the process, Sarah was great at communication and follow-up, always sending tips, very thorough training recaps, and responding to questions along the way. She not only helped reduce our dogs stress, but our own stress as well. Definitely recommend her and Instinct both!

I had a wonderful experience with Instinct and in particular, with our trainer Sarah Dixon. We signed up for 2 week puppy raising whereby our Maltese Bianca stayed with Sarah for a full training immersion experience. Before she left she knew only the very basic commands of sit and down and only with the most generous of food luring. When she returned, her command vocabulary had increased. More importantly, she seemed to be much more engaged in the training sessions which made the baton pass to me much easier. She was also walking beautifully on the leash.Sarah was excellent in her communication and provided many updates, pictures and videos over the course of the 2 weeks. Its been several weeks since Bianca returned and Sarah continues to email and check in on our progress as well as provide suggestions for any issues we might be having.I cant recommend Instinct (and Sarah in particular) enough. Well continue to work with Bianca as she matures but the foundation that Sarah built was invaluable and made everything that has come since much easier. Thanks to Sarah and the Instinct team!

From our initial consultation with Trina, the owner of the NYC location, to every visit weve had with our wonderful trainer, Sarah D., weve had such a fantastic experience with Instinct. After trying a different training company we didnt quite vibe with, we did some more research and saw Instincts glowing reviews--and it has definitely been worth the investment. They care deeply about making sure you have the tools to succeed and theyve gone out of their way to check-in about our dog. Our dog has some severe people-anxiety issues that didnt phase Sarah or Trina. They set realistic expectations and worked with us completely. We highly recommend working with Instinct.

Instinct is phenomenal! My pup Riley completed the 3 week board and train program to work on fear aggression and anxiety issues. She has shown tremendous progress since coming home. Instinct is wonderful about ensuring that the skills she learned at camp are being generalized and they include an at-home session in the package. They are professional and really care about the dogs that they work with. I would definitely recommend them!

I cant say enough good things about Instinct and the trainer I worked with, Brian! In short, he changed my life and my relationship to my dog, Ginger.Frankly, my first thought was, Is it going to worth the money?. Answer is it was the best money I ever spent. The main thing to know is that at Instinct it is not a one-off appointment. They provide you with training and support well past your initial session (for no extra charge).Ive had dogs all my life but when Ginger started to refuse to be leashed up to go out and did not fit the profile of a dog afraid of the outdoors, I knew there was something else going on.On the Trello website they provide for you after your appointment, I posted each day with an update on Gingers progress or lack there of. Brian responded promptly each day with thoughtful questions, insights and recommendations. He walked me through various possible issues and potential solutions until we got it right. With Brians patience, expertise and generosity of time, we were able to determine the issue behind Gingers reluctance to being leashed, and we have been able to resume our lengthy, wonderful walks in Central Park.

We are thrilled with our experience at Instinct. Casey (and all the staff) really got to know our pup, Ernie, and he learned a lot in his two weeks at camp. He now walks nicely on a leash, checks in with us regularly on and off leash and comes when called, even when he is distracted. We love Instincts positive reinforcement approach and found the follow-up visits and exercises easy to understand and uphold. Our dog has some issues with his back legs and the entire team at Instinct kept a close eye on him and modified his play schedule to accommodate his disability. We felt that he was safe and in good hands throughout his stay. They even provided photos, updates, and some videos of his training progress. We highly recommend Instinct.

When we got a rescue puppy last fall I contacted Instinct Dog Training and was put in touch with trainer Maggie Withum. She took the time to hear my worries and gave me actionable ideas and training to improve some of our dogs more annoying behaviors. Here we are 10 months later and her training is paying off. I highly recommend Maggie, shes really pleasant to work with, and so knowledgeable about training.

They are the best. My puppy, Gigi, was very skittish and nervous walking the streets of NYC. We started with obedience training with Mari who was great with obedience training and also started to address the anxiety issue. But my puppy was a tough challenge and addressing her anxiety was very difficult. Enter Brian Burton, the co-owner, into the picture and he is an an animal behavior specialist. Every session yielded progress even if only on video and not in person. He is amazingly caring, knowledgeable and excellent at what he does. Within five weeks my little Gigis anxiety is gone and she walks next to me perfectly and thanks to Brian I have learned to communicate with her thru the leash when walking so it has become a breeze to have her do what I want. Every penny I spent was worth it!!!

I came across Instinct after I searched for a boarding service that takes in dogs with behavior problems. My dog isn’t great with strangers and I needed a place that would be able to handle that.We had the meet and greet and after that I knew my dog would be fine in their hands. The facility is clean, the play areas are big, and I knew they would be able to handle my dog.I wasn’t expecting a report card of the stay, but they were a welcome surprise. After just one day my dog has adjusted well and was thriving. I used their services for 5 days and those report card were a great way to see that my dog was doing well.I will be using their training services at some point in the future but as far as just boarding goes- I can’t recommend them enough.

We love Instinct for our pup Chelsea. She is a pit mix we adopted from the ASPCA - when we first brought her home she had a lot of behavioral issues and anxiety that caused her to act out. We took her to Instincts board and train program and it completely changed our relationship with her, her comfort in our home and around other people, etc. She is now affection and responds very well to commands. Instinct has great resources available for their alumni pets, which have really helped us keep up with Chelseas training and reinforce new positive habits. Highly recommend!

Great trainers who clearly care about getting your dog to its best! My 8.5 year old German Shepherd was going through some health issues when we first discussed a board and train camp, so Instinct really worked with me to make sure we went ahead with the best option! Varta ended up spending 3 weeks at Instinct and loving it. She was reactive towards other dogs (barking, lunging) - and because of her personality, I knew she would never be 100% quiet. After working with Instinct, were able to pass other dogs on the sidewalk, and if there is a reaction, its calmed much quicker than I had ever been able to do on my own. Im also able to identify which dogs are more likely to set her off, and read her body language so we can get out of situations that make her unhappy/stressed. Theyre also very supportive in following up with any questions or issues that arise after the camp. I highly recommend them!

We started at Instinct with board and train for our dog for two weeks. Our dog, Coach, was assigned to train with Maggie, who couldn’t have done a better job training him or taking care of him. Leaving your dog with someone else can be hard, but the fact that Maggie clearly loves him almost as much as we do makes us feel at ease. She did a great job patiently working with Coach on staying, jumping and leash-walking, and helped teach us how to keep up the good behavior at home. She even came to our apartment to ensure the training stuck back at home. She continues to stay in touch to see how Coach is doing and to offer advice/tweaks to the training depending on our feedback. She really went the extra mile and we couldn’t be more appreciative.Coach has been back in Instinct’s care a few times now and we’ll never go anywhere else for it in NYC. They all really try to help your pup as much as possible and will send plenty of updates with photos as well, which helps a lot when you’re missing them!

We got our first dog Kofi in December 2020 (pandemic pup!) and were very anxious to ensure that we taught him good habits. Luckily, we lived right around the corner from Instinct. The facility is very clean, and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. We first enrolled Kofi in private lessons with our trainer Maggie, and he loved her right away! She has a very calm and pleasant demeanor so even though our pup was very excitable, she was still able to get him under control and have him listen to her. In addition to teaching him basic life skills, she also helped him build his confidence especially around loud city sounds and unfamiliar objects. She is very patient and would always explain the dog psychology behind everything she taught us. This gave us better insight into dog behavior in general and made us feel ready to handle even unfamiliar situations in the future. In addition to the private lessons, we also enrolled him in day school where he got to play (supervised) with other pups while still learning. Instinct also offers free alumni classes which we also took advantage of.In summary, Instinct and especially Maggie helped us mold our dog into the friendly, well trained and well-adjusted doggo he is today!

Could not recommend Instinct more highly. Theyve been really thorough and effective with our little rescue, Maggie Mae. Weve watched her go from a dog that was sweet with us, but afraid of the rest of the world to a little social butterfly. She now LOVES going to dog parks and getting to meet other pups. Shes happier. Were happier. Our trainer, Maggie Withum, is knowledgeable, empathetic, and a bit of a miracle worker. If youre on the fence about starting training, Im here to tell you it is worth every penny.

Sarah was wonderful to work with and really helped us to understand our pup and his behavior/needs much better as well as equipping us with tools to manage unwanted behavior. She helped us with: basic command training, separation anxiety, leash manners, mastering the stay command when there are visitors, and aggressiveness towards children among other things. She gave us tools that we can use on ongoing basis and was really responsive and helpful through email as we got to know our dog better and new behaviors arose. I highly recommend working with her.

We adopted our two-year-old terrier mix pup Barkley about three months ago. Even though we were told that she had no history of aggression and walked great on a leash, as soon as we brought her home we realized she was very leash reactive and had guarding issues and extreme hyperactivity. Sarah Dixon was recommended to us by our rescue agency, so I contacted Instinct immediately to set up private lessons with her.Having Sarah work with Barkley has been the best choice weve made for Barkley. The first day Barkley and I met with Sarah during our initial consultation, she taught me a few simple exercises that would tide us over through the holidays, including settle and a basic sit. About a month later, we started our formal lessons, and since then Barkley has learned multiple commands (including paw, target, touch, stay and a still-in-progress place, leave it and drop it (which, ironically, she only seems to do for Sarah!)) but most importantly, Sarah has given us insight into Barkleys personality and behavior that we never would have been able to identify on our own. She has become my sounding board for any questions or concerns I have between sessions, and has truly helped me through some dark and difficult times with Barkley. Barkley is now much more comfortable with handling, her hyperactivity is more manageable and shes settled into our home in a way I didnt think possible when we first got her. Friends and family members who met her when we first got her have said theyve noticed a dramatic improvement in her behavior.I will also note that recently Barkley has exhibited strange reactions to handling on one side of her body, so Sarah took some time during our last session to do a full assessment on her and provide specific suggestions of what to talk to our vet about. She emailed me her findings so I could forward it to our vet and has made herself available to speak to the vet if necessary. We have one session left with Sarah, but now that Barkley is technically an Instinct alum, we can also start attending the group Good Citizen classes at the Instinct facility. The classes are free and I think will be a great way to supplement Barkleys training program. Also, I have visited the Instinct facilities, and theyre fantastic - theres a big yard in the back where Ive seen boarding dogs play and everyone is incredibly pleasant. Sarah and the other trainers will occasionally hold free sessions on a variety of topics throughout the year, which I have attended and found very informative.Barkley is still a huge work in progress, and will be for awhile - but without Sarah, I wouldnt have the confidence to believe that Barkley can one day be the perfect dog for our family. I know these sessions are expensive, but Sarah is flexible and will work with you to find the right package for your needs. She doesnt recommend more than what she honestly believe your dog requires.I cant say enough about Sarah Dixon and Instinct more broadly, and I absolutely recommend them to everyone, from those looking to train a new puppy to those who might be struggling with a difficult dog (like me). Thank you Sarah!

Brian and his team were incredibly helpful in acclimating our 12 week old rescue to life in the city, specifically helping with teaching her how to walk on a leash on the city streets, getting her used to the sights and sounds of NYC, helping her sleep through the night in her crate and socializing her with other dogs during a two and a half week puppy boot camp. The team was responsive, friendly and helpful, even long after puppy boot camp was over. I’d highly reccomend Instinct.

The people that work there legitimately love your pets and send you updates WITH photos. Someone is there 24/7 and the dogs have so much fun - it’s amazing. We also used them for their customized board and train when we first moved to the city. Their attention to detail and focus is spectacular, and our dogs are so much happier for it. I cannot say enough good things about this place. We call it ‘camp’ and anytime we ask the dogs if they want to go to ‘camp’ they get so excited and happy, and stay that way even when we pick them up.

  • Review 48 (2019-08-15 - Rating: 5)

We are so thankful for the top notch behavior training our dog received with Devi at Instinct. Weve worked with several trainers over the past year to help with our dogs fearful, reactive behavior. While they were all wonderful trainers who gave us quality advice, our dog needed more intense training to truly change his behavior in a short amount of time. A job caused us to need to move from a rural area to NYC, and we knew our dog needed to make some major changes to survive in that environment. Three weeks at camp was a big investment, but it was worth every penny. Our dog isnt perfect, but he has improved at least 80%. We can walk him on busy streets, take him in elevators, stop to talk with people on the street or in the lobby, and even go to the vet without him reacting. Theres still work to do at home, but were following Devis advice and continuing to make positive gains every day.

We had such a positive experience using Instincts board + train program! We sent our dog, Melly, to Instinct to work on her leash reactivity around other dogs - typically, we couldnt pass other dogs on the sidewalk without her barking and walks had become a really stressful/almost embarrassing experience. We worked with Maggie and we were so thrilled with the results. We know that Mel is always going to be a little nervous around strange dogs, but Instinct gave her the tools to feel more confident and to learn how to trust that we, as her handlers, would get her out of any unsafe or scary situations. Maggie also gave us several lessons so that we also felt comfortable employing the training methods so that we could upkeep everything at home. Mel did so well that they recommended that she come home a few days early and she came home a happier, more confident dog with far better leash manners! Now, we can pass dogs on the street without barking / lunging and know how to reset when Mel gets too keyed up. While its obviously not a cheap service, we felt like the cost was very reasonable for what we were getting and the results were worth every penny. We initially found Instinct from all of the great reviews, but we ultimately chose to proceed with Instinct because we immediately felt like our sweet pup would be in an environment where shed be loved and given lots of positive reinforcement throughout her training (we had been really leery about some of the e-collar training facilities, despite the results). They also posted regular pupdates , pictures, and videos, which were sooooo appreciated since we were missing our pup! Thank you Maggie and the team at Instinct!

Instinct Dog Behavior & Training was exactly what we needed for our rescue dog! Our trainer Casey, specializing in leash reactivity (our pups most pressing issue), helped us see humane and effective results from our very first consultation. She coached us in clicker training on everything from loose leash walking to dealing with potentially dangerous on-leash situations. It was an excellent bonus that Instinct provided bomb-proof helper dogs during the sessions to address the problems head on. After each of our 4 meetings, we felt like we had clear ideas of how to work to improve our dogs behaviors. After finishing the package with Casey, and with continued daily reinforcements of her recommendations, we see ongoing improvements in our dogs behavior. We will definitely return for a brush up session on leash reactivity, to address any other unmanageable behaviors that may arise, or to visit the Canine Good Citizen Classes provided for Instinct graduates.

My 2 year old Lagotto recently moved into the cite from a house on a lake with a big yard. He had some bad experiences with aggressive dogs, small children ramming into him on scooters and being scared by bikes and runners scaring him from behind. It got to a point I felt awful and was considering moving.Instinct was recommended and I had 3 one-on-one classes in our home and neighborhood with Sarah Dixon and from the first day she reinforced the work I had using proactive work with reactive dogs. That along with her patience teaching me how to use a new harness she recommended on walks where he encountered the many situations that he found stressful I am having much more relaxed walks for my pup and me.Unfortunately she is relocating but she explained how I can have my dog take classes and other programs at the Instinct headquarters to help him become a happy canine citizen. I look forward to signing up and meeting another trainer as wonderful as Sarah has been. I am so sad to lose her but glad I had her as a friend and instructor.

Straight up amazing. I worked with Sarah Dixon and she was extremely professional and kind. Our pup had a bit of a rough start in life and had anxiety even for the most basic things. With Sarahs help we managed to understand what our pup needed and how to make her life better. Her advices and training techniques were stellar and her positivity made learning for us and for the pup fun and very enjoyable. I would give 10 stars if I could.

I can seriously recommend the board & train camp! Our mini aussie had some serious leash aggression issues and wed gone through multiple trainers, including another board & train elsewhere that did absolutely nothing. By this time I had waisted thousands of dollars and walking our dog was extremely stressful. I was started to cave and even considered trainers that used prong and shock collars out of sheer desperation. Luckily we decided to try one more time and found Instinct. Our dog went for a 3-week b&t during which we also had three training sessions together with our dog and the trainer. The previous b&t we had just dropped our dog off and picked him up, at Instinct however, we were included in the process. Our trainer understood us and listened to us and we finally got the help we needed to make our walks more enjoyable. Our dog is still very much a work in progress but thanks to Instinct I now know what to do with my dog to prevent him from spinning out of control and become calmer in the presence of other dogs.

Suze, Trina, & the whole Instinct staff have been amazing since day 1 & continue to be amazing! Our Redbone Coonhound puppy was no easy task for them to train & she came back a whole different dog (for the good) after a two week stay training program. Shes since gone back for a few days b/c she needed the extra time & had a couple of in-home training sessions that have also really helped. I would highly recommend Instinct to anyone looking for training for their pups, for any reason at all. They do wonders! Well continue to work with & support Instinct in any way we can. :)

I’m so happy with my experience at instinct dog training! My dog Harry is a sweet spirited pup and was having problems with jumping, general obedience, leash manners and impulse control so I signed him up for the one week board and train program. My in studio consultation before hand was very informative! The staff was extra helpful as they walked me through the day to day activities and discussed the goals I had for Harry and his training. During the week his trainer, Maggie, sent videos of the various positive reinforcement training games they did each day! This was especially helpful because not only was I able to see his progress, but I was also able to save the videos to aid in continuing his training at home. Being that I’m a student and working, a typical weekly training program was hard to consistently fit into my schedule so the training program was perfect for me! Because it was just a week, he wasn’t completly and flawlessly trained afterwards (which is to be expected), however it gave Har a much needed head start and sturdy foundation for continuing the training at home on our own time. The training games Maggie taught us were easy to do at home anytime and fun for Harry! Although his training mainly focused on impulse control and jumping, Maggie was able to dedicate a whole follow up training session to leash training as well. The whole staff was also very responsive to any questions and concerns I had during training and continue to be currently. I highly recommend this program for NYC dog owners who need a good foundation for training their pups and the tools to continue that training at home.

We felt taken care of, supported and in great hands from our first interaction with Sarah (both of them) when we brought our dog in for a train and board. Our dog is a rescue and highly phobic, so we needed a great deal of support. Our trainer Sarah was always responsive, supportive and realistic with us about his training progress. We couldnt have felt more supported by her and everyone at Instinct.

We are so happy with our entire experience at Instinct and the results of the 2 week training camp we did. Our dog Louie, a 10 month old rambunctious Samoyed, was giving us some seriously problems on leash. In short, he was literally attacking us when he didnt get something he wanted or when some stimuli (usually unknown to us) was upsetting him on walks. Several private lessons with various trainers in Brooklyn and a puppy obedience class didnt help at all. Instinct was our last hope and they did not disappoint--they truly saved our dog. Suze, our trainer, was absolutely wonderful and in a short amount of time turned Louie into a calm, well-behaved walker and a much more manageable dog all around. We went from completely dreading walking him and stressing out over when he might have one of his episodes as we called them, to being able to really enjoy him on walks. Instincts training methods were fair, humane, and easy to keep up with at home. Best of all, we could tell Louie actually had a great time at camp learning with Suze and getting time to play with the lovely care staff and the fellow camper dogs. Sending him to Instinct was the best decision weve made as dog owners and 100% worth the money. If you have a dog with real behavioral issues--this is the place for you and your dog. Thank you Instinct (especially Suze) !

I sent my 5 year old pitbull to Instinct Dog Behavior & Training to work on correcting some of her bad behaviors (like leash pulling and dog agression). I couldnt walk my dog with out having the leash wrapped tightly around my hand or having my dog pull so hard. I was skeptical of leaving her at a training facility for 3 weeks or that her bad behaviors could be corrected (as I have worked unsucessfully with 3 other dog trainers). But after working with Kate for 3 weeks & getting lots of love from the wonderful staff, my dog is much more manageable now. I can take her for walks without having to worry about pulling the leash too hard or having her lunge for other dogs/pigeons. I will definitely recommend Instinct Dog Behavior & Training to all my friends or to anyone whos reading this.

Suze Cullinan and all the team at Instinct are amazing; I highly recommend them. The facility is fabulous (what a find in NYC) and is equipped to help your dog overcome whatever behavioral issues he or she might have. I had an excitable, highly-energetic 5-month old puppy who needed help developing his social skills and modifying his behavior when we were out on walks and in the dog run. He spent two weeks at Instinct, which he LOVED, and returned to us a calmer, wiser soul. Hes still his excitable self (we wouldnt have it any other way) but hes now able to control his energy. He enjoys walks more (because he doesnt immediately alienate owners and dogs alike by jumping all over them) and, consequently, so do I! His loose leash walking is impeccable, his in-home recall and bed stays are excellent and he is much more manageable when guests come over. The post-camp support and training for my family and me was first class. We continue to have access to Suze, who is available to answer our questions and to help us work out any relapses we, or our dog, may experience (its usually us, of course). We are absolutely delighted with the results and I highly recommend Instinct to set you up on the road to a successful, happy, loving relationship with your prized pooch.

We had our beloved pup Reina, 9 months old at the time, stay here for a week while we were traveling. We worked with Michelle, and focused almost entirely on leash training. Reina is a Lagotto, a scent hound, so walking on the sidewalks of Lower Manhattan can be a challenge with everything she wants to smell and eat! We were amazed at the progress Reina made while staying there and working with Michelle! Michelle has continued to provide follow up support and were confident we can take it to the next level with consistency. I highly recommend Instinct east Harlem and their wonderful trainers and staff!

My dog, Benny, did a multi-session in-home training program with Instinct trainer Jessica Schulte. I cannot say enough good things about Jessica and the outstanding job she did. Bennys transformation over the few weeks he worked with Jessica has been incredible. My family, my friends, building staff, my neighbors - everyone - has commented on how much better Benny behaves now. Before starting our training package with Jessica, walks were stressful and exhausting, as Bennys response to any other dog was so out of control, I had to pick him up whenever another dog was in sight (which is almost constantly in my neighborhood). Having people over was also stressful, as Benny would jump on any new friends he met (and he thinks everyone is his friend). In a number of other ways, his general lack of obedience and impulse control was causing problems. There was a change in Bennys overall obedience and presence of mind after the first day working with Jessica. I listed off a random collection of goals I had for him - everything from walking nicely on a leash, to staying off the couch except when called, to staying seated rather than jumping when someone enters the room. I didnt realistically expect her to remember everything I listed, much less actually tackle everything, but Jessica worked with Benny to accomplish every single one of the goals I listed on that first day (and then some). This is just one illustration of the fact that Jessica is both a great trainer and a great listener. Over the course of our lesson plan, I also came to learn that she is courteous and trustworthy (she had key access to my apartment, yet always took the time to see if I was home before coming up), always punctual, full of encouragement and positive energy, and a wonderful, friendly person to work with. I was also impressed with how flexible her approach was - whatever I wanted Benny to learn, she would accommodate it. She was also thorough, sending me summaries after each lesson, which made practicing on my own with Benny so much easier. Perhaps most important of all, it was apparent every moment working with Benny that she truly cared about him and is invested in the work she does.In short, Jessica completely changed my relationship with my dog (for the better). The stress I experienced before during walks and when meeting new people is gone, and I can spend more time now enjoying my time with Benny.I am truly grateful for Jessicas commitment and hard work teaching Benny how to be a better puppy! I would recommend Instinct and Jessica Schulte to anyone seeking positive reinforcement training for their dog.

I can’t even put into words how grateful we are for Instinct. Three weeks into having our rescue pitbull mix Baco home from Puerto Rico, we felt at our wits end. He was completely overwhelmed by the city, causing chaos at every turn, and biting us when he was over-stimulated. We were wary of taking him to a board and train so early on because we didn’t want to overwhelm him, but the team at Instinct helped to put us at ease right away. Me AND my fiancé literally sobbed when we said goodbye! Casey, his trainer, was so patient with him (and us) during his time there. Yes, she taught him many things, but more importantly taught us where his behavior was coming from, what he needed from us, and what work we needed to put in going forward. We put in a LOT of work with Baco, but he is hands down the best part of our lives. We only have Instinct to thank for teaching us about dog behavior and allowing us to empathize with our sweet, sensitive, crazy boy.

We sent Ava to Puppy Camp for two weeks with Instinct. She worked with Maggie who worked with her on a number of basic foundational puppy skills, but primarily on impulse control and walking patiently on a leash. Ava came back having learned so much, and Instinct left us with a number of techniques and drills for us to continue to work on with her. In addition the puppy camp gave us access to a weekly obedience class which continues to challenge Ava and provide us with a good community and forum to ask any ongoing questions as we continue to train puppy Ava.We are so happy with the ways that Ava was able to socialize with a number of different dogs and humans during her time with them. She is a whole lot better on the leash. And her struggles with impulse control (jumping, pulling on the leash, crying) have greatly improved. In addition, they left us with a number of tools to continue to work with her on managing those issues as the grows into an adult dog.Communication could have been a bit better at times and left some room for improvement. The take-home lessons were something we were looking forward to, and they were inconsistent; and not all of our questions along the way got answered directly (to be fair, we asked a lot of them). That said, overall, Maggie was/is extremely committed to Avas training, often sent us special things we didnt ask for like videos and pictures while she was away, and we really value our ongoing relationship with her as well as her willingness to be a training resource for us by receiving and responding to our questions and concerns. With a whole lot of help from Instinct, Ava has a great foundation of puppy behavioral skills and we are excited to see the dog she will grow into

We are so pleased that after researching many dog trainers in NYC we chose Instinct Dog Behavior & Training to help us with our rescue dog, Panda. The training sessions we have with Sarah Fraser are educational and fun for both Panda and ourselves. The difference we have seen in Pandas behavior in just a few lessons has been remarkable. This is due to Sarahs teaching methods, her clear explanations and observations about Pandas reactions to things and also how we interact with him. Sarah is a people person as well as a dog person and treats us like adults rather than naughty children who dont know how to look after their dog! We are looking forward to continuing to work with Sarah and her team to help make Pandas life in NYC both safe and fun. We cant praise Instinct and Sarah highly enough and would recommend them to anyone looking for a dog trainer in NYC. Louise, Mark & Panda!

We rescued a mutt puppy and had no idea he would grow to be 70 pounds at just 6 months old. Needless to say, we had our hands full from the very start (and had no idea what we were doing). When it came time for us to train him, we decided to puppy board him with a trainer through INSTINCT. We were blessed to have Kate work with Bud because she worked wonders! Bud went from running around, pulling on the leash, jumping up on everyone he saw- to listening, walking well on his leash and keeping his cool when strangers walked by or went to pet him.We decided to board Bud with INSTINCT once again about 3 months after puppy boarding when we traveled to CA for the holidays- he LOVES it there (not to mention his obsession with Kate- he absolutely adores her!). We trust INSTINCT and all the faculty there- they are very communicate and my partner and I always felt like we were in the loop.I would tell my dearest fellow pup mom to use INSTINCT- we are BIG fans!

The whole team at Instinct is amazing. Especially Sarah and Samantha, who worked with our little guy in puppy sleepaway camp. The training put us all on a great path. The follow up was awesome and even helped break this human of some bad habits! Best decision we could have made

We sent our Cairn Terrier Luke to Instinct in Harlem In July. Luke was extremely hypersensitive, and agitated when on the leash towards other dogs. On top of that, he had his terrier traits getting in the way of us properly training him at home. After a 2 week boot camp with Michelle Aragon , Luke is the perfect gentleman. He is responsive and with further training at home using the base training he got , It is like night and day.The updates and attentiveness to our needs or concerns throughout the process and beyond was beyond our expectations. He is a tough cookie and hard to understand for most people but I have no concerns when he is with the staff at Instinct. Now Luke is at the Englewood facility for boarding for a couple days during the holiday. Although it was tough to say goodbye, I know he is in the best of hands.

Jessica is magic! We have a 3 year old rescue border collie/terrier mix who is aggressive towards strangers. He used to lunge for any strangers in our lobby, in our home, or anyone who tried to pet him on the street.Jessica took us through the steps of impulse control training, and teaching him that we are the ones who will keep him safe - not the other way around - allowing him to relax. Its been a lot of work, but we can now confidently and calmly walk him past strangers in the lobby without a reaction from him. He will still react to strangers in our home, but he settles down much quicker, and overall hes a much calmer dog, to the point where our friends (who he loves) have all commented on his improvement.Jessica also taught us go say hi - when we walk him on the street and someone wants to pet him, he knows he can run up to them, give them a nose touch or a high five and run back us right away for safety and a treat without conflict. Our in-home sessions have ended, but Jessica has been following up with us via email to make sure everything is still going well with our pup. Couldnt recommend Jessica and Instinct enough!

The Instinct folks are so helpful and kind and such good trainers. They’re also wonderful with Conall (who can be a very feisty terrier) whenever he boards with them. And their new location is lovely! All in all, I can’t recommend Instinct highly enough.update: its 4 months later, and the more time Conall spends at Instinct the happier we are. Hes had 3 training camps and several boarding stays, and hes a much happier dog for it. They take such time and care to learn Conalls peccadillos and work with him in the most effective ways. They are so knowledgeable and skilled and caring - I couldnt be happier!

We worked with Jessica Schulte in Manhattan and had the most wonderful experience. She shows so much care for our dog and really listens to what you want to work on with your pup. No task was too big! She helped us train our dog (Dobby) far beyond simple commands. She taught us how to do scent work with him (having him find my cell phone) and how to answer his commands as Harry Potter spells (because his name is Dobby....get it?). Shes got such a great disposition that lessons were like hanging out with a friend who is also obsessed with your dog AND super focused on your pup learning the whole time. I have already recommended her to others. Should another pup arrive to our home, shell be the first one well call!

Moving from Florida to NYC with our 65+ rescue shepherd, Charlie, was tough - she was scared to go outside and spent most of the time hiding in the bathroom.Luckily, we found Sarah Dixon from Instinct Dog Behavior & Training. Sarah was incredibly patient and kind with Charlie and always made our family feel like everything was going to be okay. We learned so many tips & tricks from Sarah that we honestly would have never figured out without her. If you’re wondering whether or not your furry kid would benefit from a trainer - please just do it and make sure it’s with Instinct!

We brought our English Bulldog Loafy for the training Loafy had terrible anxiety and separation issues. The whole team at Instinct is amazing, knowledgeable, and supportive. They really do care about your pups. Kate our trainer was fantastic and still checks in refgulsrly. We saw major improvements in Loafy upon his return and were given the proper tools and training ourselves to continue. Thank you!

Brian and Sarah are the best dog trainers Ive met so far. My dog Seamus needed extra help with passing the CGC exam and they have provided me with real world tools to help Seamus be a better dog. Seamus also had a problem with separation anxiety and with Brians help, he has improved with longer down stays and separations. I especially like the free Canine Good Citizen classes in Central Park for their alumni students. Its a great way to practice our skills and meet other dogs. Brian and Sarah have always responded to my many emails and I appreciate their assistance outside the class with tips and customized homework. I highly recommend them and may continue higher ed for Seamus @ Instinct Dog.

I love Instinct and so does my dog! And that says a lot because she is afraid of new humans. They make her feel so comfortable, are able to read her body language, and know exactly how to react when she is acting timid or afraid. When I am out of town, I know that my pup is in great hands!

  • Review 89 (2019-10-17 - Rating: 5)

Sarah did an excellent job helping us work to alleviate the separation anxiety and overall fearfulness of our newly adopted rescue dog. Although there is still a way to go, we have seen improvement and we now have a framework for continuing to help our rescue.

He gave me tools that I could start using right away that teach my dog w/o scaring him. I feel much more in control and confident w/ my new puppy. I would recommend Gordon to anyone w/ a new puppy!Looking forward to start their classes.

I have a rescue dog from Thailand I picked up at JFK. This dog was very fearful. He slipped his collar and ran away; after I got him back he refused to leave my apartment. The first trainer I hired said that it was a shame we couldnt ship him back to Thailand, and recommended I put him in a sanctuary. I loved Spotty who is very sweet. A couple of months later I hired Sarah Dixon of Instinct. Now he goes out twice or three times a day and sometimes makes it to the park.

Trina and Maggie talked to me several times for hours as we were trying to decide how to proceed with a dog we had recently adopted who was showing behaviors that were increasingly concerning. They were professional as well as kind and counselled me towards a decision that was actually against their business interest but they believed was in my best interest. I think that is the mark of a business to be trusted.

I have a 3 year old Maltese that I brought to Instinct about 6 months after I got him. He did 2 weeks of the Board and Train program with Oyuki and the progress made in 2 weeks was phenomenal. She worked with him on his reactivity and instead of taking 2-3 minutes to recover after seeing another dog, it now takes 30 seconds or less. Oyuki was also really great in providing me with resources to continue his training after those 2 weeks and the at-home training sessions really helped to bridge the gap between camp and home. I cannot recommend Instinct and Oyuki enough. She has worked wonders for my Marli.

Ive only had 3 sessions (including the first meet and greet) with Maggie, but she is a life saver. I have a nervous rescue pup who is scared of everything, but Maggie has already given us tons of tools. We also tried another trainer at Pet Smart, who is okay, but doesnt make me feel confident like Maggie does, and the facilities arent as good obviously. The difference is, after even just a short session at Instinct, I feel like Im making good progress, and I feel good about the relationship Im building with my pup. Im so incredibly lucky to have them in our neighborhood!

Weve had such a positive experience with the whole Instinct crew, and especially our trainer Maggie. We adopted our puppy, Otto, from a local rescue organization, and Maggie was such an incredible help in helping us train and socialize him. All of her advice was so helpful, and our dog has benefited greatly from her expertise. Additionally, Maggie is incredibly thoughtful, pleasant to work with, and responsive via email/text. I cant recommend Maggie and the Instinct crew enough!!

Jessica was beyond amazing! We thought we had a dog that would be not be able to be trained. After the first lesson, we were blown away with what we were able to accomplish. By the end of the third session, Jagger was laying down on command and walking without pulling on the leash. He continued to surprise us and we are sad the 6 lessons are over! We hit the goals that we set out to achieve with his training and will certainly get brush up lessons in the future. We cannot thank Jessica enough!

I have an aggressive Jack Russell (Bam Bam) who was making everyday walks insanely stressful. Having to avoid dogs and people along the way, constantly having to cross the street to not have him so overwhelmed and on edge. But since we started working with our trainer Maggie, I can say Bam Bam both feels and looks more at ease walking for the first time ever. He was able to walk along the same sidewalk with other people without lunging, barking or tugging on the leash at all. He’s also been able to work on his abilities to look at other dogs from a distance and not bark, growl or attempt to launch himself, which is not something I ever thought would be possible for him!Maggie has sincerely been so patient and accommodating with us and with Bam Bam and I don’t think he could have got as far as he did without her help, I am so so grateful! She not only has been teaching Bam Bam but myself as well to have more patience with him and to know the right steps needed to make sure his training is in session even at home.

Jessica Schulte has been our trainer averaging about twice a week for the first five months of our puppy’s life. She is hands down one of the most caring, knowledgeable, and all around terrific trainers you could imagine. She has helped us with everything from basic potty training (pads and outside/walks) to advanced tricks. She has also made herself available to answer any questions via text message (and sometimes at all hours of the day and night) and is a constant source of encouragement and comfort through the many ups and downs of the puppy raising process. After each lesson she follows up with a detailed email of everything learned that day and what to work on until the next lesson. Our little pup Josie is a happy, confident, and obedient little love bug because of Jessica’s amazing attitude and guidance. We not only consider her our trainer now but also our friend. We couldn’t be more grateful to instinct for connecting us with this incredible human!
